The MIS Program
The MIS major at the University of Dayton is designed primarily to develop business systems analysts. These professionals analyze and design information systems in business organizations and marshal resources (i.e., manage projects) to bring the systems development effort to successful completion. MIS professionals also facilitate the successful operation and maintenance of organizational information systems.
Beyond the core business curriculum common to all business majors, the MIS major is comprised of eighteen hours (7 courses) of required courses which make up the MIS core and nine hours (3 courses) in a focused area of emphasis. Emphases are designed to enable the MIS major to gain additional depth in a specific area of MIS practice and to facilitate double-majors or minors in other business disciplines. Specific areas of emphasis will change from time to time, reflecting the dynamic nature of the MIS discipline. Two emphases - Business Intelligence and Business Systems Development - are already available. Other emphases that currently are being considered for development include Information Security/Compliance/Quality and E-Business for Entrepreneurs. Students should meet with their advisor to select an appropriate emphasis and/or second major/minor consistent with their interests and career goals.
A distinctive feature of the program is the year-long capstone consulting project for a local organization. Naturally, this live experience is a major selling point in job interviews. Check out descriptions of some recent projects. Besides this built-in real-world experience, most students also take advantage of the many available MIS internship and/or "co-op" education opportunities.
